GreenPower has arrived with South Carolina's first source of renewable power generation now open for business. GreenPower is electricity generated by sustainable resources such as solar and garbage in selected landfills. Generated by Santee Cooper and distributed by Black River Electric Cooperative, South Carolina's GreenPower plant will collect methane gas from the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Landfill, the Lee County Landfill SC, LLC and the Richland County Landfill. There, the methane gases that would normally be released into the atmosphere-gases that possibly contribute to global warming-will be used as GreenPower fuel.
The GreenPower plant generates a maximum of 14.2 megawatts of electricity which reduces enough methane emissions to be the environmental equivalent of planting more than 17,800 acres of trees. There is also a 16kw solar pavilion demonstration project on the Coastal Carolina University campus in Conway, South Carolina. GreenPower is something we can all live with. By participating in the GreenPower program, you can help ensure its success now and into the future.
Capital Credits are a popular benefit for our members and a
good example of the many ways we put service before profit. Each year, all
revenue over and above expenses is assigned by the cooperative to each member's
Capital Credit account. The amount assigned to an individual account is
determined by the member's yearly revenue paid for energy.
In the past five years, the Cooperative has
returned over $8.6 million to its member owners. The total assets of the
Cooperative are $60 million with total outstanding debt being only $11.4
million. In the Year 2004, over 2 million dollars were returned to the membership. Capital Credits are a benefit of membership in a
member-owned utility.
If you move,
be sure to leave your forwarding address with us so we can send your Capital
Credit check to you.

As your electronic appliances and equipment become more and more complex, the
need for protection from harmful voltage surges increases.
Protect your sensitive electronics such as
computers, VCRs and other appliances from sudden changes in voltage caused by
line disturbances. Black
River Electric Cooperative already has lightning and surge protection built into its
system which guards against most voltage surges caused by birds, animals and
trees contacting power lines, accidents involving utility poles, lightning
storms and other disturbances. Even with
this protection, an occasional voltage surge can reach your home. Because
typical home circuit breakers do not react fast enough to stop these surges,
your unprotected televisions, VCRs, personal computers, microwaves, home
security systems, garage door openers, electronic thermostats, appliance motors
and other electrical and electronic equipment may be at risk.
Surge Guard
is designed to help protect electrical and electronic equipment from damage due
to voltage surges caused by lightning or other disturbances. Surge Guard
is not a substitute for lightning rods or other devices intended to protect
people and property against direct or nearby lightning strikes. Black
River
Electric Cooperative offers several Surge Guard devices installed both indoors
and outside so that we can tailor a protection program to your particular needs.
Because Surge Guard is flexible, you can add additional protection devices as
your needs change. Contact the Engineering Department for more detailed
information.
The
Bank Draft program from Black River Electric makes paying your electric
bill easier than ever. When you sign up for Bank Draft, BREC will automatically
draft your checking or savings account for the amount of your monthly electric
bill. Payments are drafted 20 days after we mail your bill or
approximately 5 days before the due date.
With
the Bank Draft, you'll never have to remember to pay your bill. Since
you'll continue to receive a monthly bill, you can easily keep track of what was
drafted out of your account. You won't have to write a check or pay for a stamp
or remember to take the envelope to the mail box. With everything else there is
to worry about, isn't it nice to have one thing you can cross off your list?
